"That won't happen to me."

Have you ever said that to yourself? While watching a dramatic report on the TV news? After reading catastrophic headlines on the internet? Or do you not even think about it? That's understandable. The Czech Republic has long been one of the safest countries in the world. In 2025, it ranked 11th according to the GPI (Global Peace Index).

However, even this fact, combined with a very effective and well-established disaster management system, does not mean absolute safety. Events in recent years in the Czech Republic and abroad show, how quickly and without warning the situation can change.

"That won't happen here."

That's what people across the country said before the widespread power outage in July 2025.

"That won't happen again."

That's what people in Moravia believed before the floods in 2024.

"That definitely won't happen to me."

This was the assumption not only of students before the active shooter attack in Prague in the winter in 2023.

"That will never happen here."

That's what most people believed before the tornado struck Moravia in 2021.
